Are Your Blinds Safe?

Blinds with cords are one of the top five concealed risks in the house, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). The CPSC advises the use of cordless blinds in all residences where children reside or visit in order to prevent catastrophic child strangulations.

A child between the ages of 7 months and 10 years old dies from blinds cord strangulation around once a month, and another child comes dangerously close to dying from it. Over five million blinds, including Roman shades, roller blinds, vertical and horizontal blinds, have been recalled by the CPSC in recent years. Wherever a blinds with a chord is installed in the home, strangulation deaths and injuries are possible. Children may pull cords that are not readily visible but are still accessible and become tangled in the loops, or they may wrap blinds cords around their necks. These occurrences take place rapidly and covertly.  

The following safety advice is provided by the CPSC to help reduce blind cord-related fatalities and injuries: 

• Examine each window treatment in the house. For all residences where children reside or visit, the CPSC advises the use of cordless blinds. 

• Verify that the product has no accessible cords on the front, the side, or the back. 

• Avoid placing cribs, beds, and other furniture next to windows because kids may climb up and access the cords if they did. 

• Make accessible any dangling cords. 

• Install tension devices to keep the nylon or looped bead chain cords on the window blinds taut.
